Hi team,

We would like to apply a retention policy to a SharePoint site so that any document created more than 90 days ago is automatically deleted.

Initially, to make a certain proof of concept, we configured the retention policy for automatic deletion of files created more than one day ago.

However, despite this policy being applied to the SharePoint site, the documents do not seem to systematically delete as soon as they have been created for more than 24 hours, but we have still observed a deletion after a certain period that we are not able to identify and understand.

I was therefore wondering if you had any explanations and more precise documentation regarding the actual functioning of retention policies and the real frequency of file deletion?

we would also wanted to see folders (and not just files) that were created more than 90 days ago to be deleted as well, but it seems that retention policies apply only to files. How can we also make the folders removed as well as files.

thanks in advanced for your help .

    Hi @J-3804,

Thank you for posting in this community.

First about your retention policy not working,

    1. The retention policy will not take effect until 7 days after it is set. I don’t know if the retention policy you created exceeds 7 days.

Reference: How long it takes for retention settings to apply.User's image

    1. If it’s been more than seven days and the retention policy still doesn’t work, then I would like to know your specific process for creating and applying the retention policy. If possible, please share with me screenshots of each step you took to create your retention policy. This will help me further test and investigate the cause of the problem. For your safety, please do not disclose your privacy issues.

The second is about setting retention policies for folders.

According to Microsoft's official documentation, retention policies do not support folders. Reference: What's included for retention and deletion.
